Dr. Xiaodong Yan

Xiaodong is an Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Arizona. Xiaodong joined the Hersam group in December 2020. His research focused on exploring new nanoelectronic materials and devices for neuromorphic computing applications. He completed his Ph.D. at the USC ECE department in 2020. Prior to that, he received his bachelor’s degree of physics at Peking University and master’s degree of EE at The University of Notre Dame.

Dr. J. Tyler Gish

Tyler is a customer support engineer with Quantum Machines. Quantum Machines is a group of physicists and engineers providing hardware and software to accelerate the realization of quantum computing. As a customer support engineer, he assists academic institutions and corporations to achieve and streamline their research objectives.

Dr. Julia R. Downing

Julia is a Senior Technology Development Scientist at Nanograf! Nanograf is a battery startup that focuses on advanced materials to develop silicon-graphene materials for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. Currently, her main workflow is centered around scale-up on

Dr. Norman Luu

Norman is a technical consultant with Exponent in the Bay Area! Exponent is a scientific consulting company that works with consumer electronics companies, automotive companies, law firms, startups, and others. Currently, his main workflow is centered around battery quality analyses, failure analysis, and litigation work. His projects typically involve a lot of materials characterization and battery cycling, so he is constantly drawing from his knowledge base that he gained during my PhD.

Sonal V. Rangnekar

Sonal will graduate with her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering this upcoming May with her thesis on the formulation of 2D material electronic inks for printed electronics! After she leaves the Hersam Group, she will be working with the Chicago Biomedical Consortium as an Entrepreneurial Fellow. Her role entails (1) promoting biotech entrepreneurship in Chicagoland, and (2) connecting life sciences PIs with pre-seed grants to help them on the journey to tech commercialization.

Dr. Sam Amsterdam

Sam graduated with a PhD in 2021. His thesis was on the optical, electrical, and morphological properties of heterojunctions between organic semiconductors and 2D materials. He is currently a postdoc at Argonne National Lab working on ALD growth of materials for a variety of optoelectronic applications.

Hadallia Bergeron

Hadallia graduated from the Hersam Group with her PhD in 2020. Her thesis work focused on the vapor-phase synthesis of two-dimensional metal chalcogenide semiconductors. Currently, she is a Solutions Consultant with commonFont, a small experience management (XM) consulting firm that specializes in configuring XM software platforms. Hadallia is part of a small group that’s starting a new satellite office in Providence, RI! She enjoys being part of a dynamic company where values such as empathy, serving the local community, and having a growth mindset are prioritized.

Linda Guiney

Linda earned her PhD in 2018 and continued to work in the Hersam Group as a postdoc until 2020. Her research covered many topics, including solution processing of 2D materials, the biological and environmental implications of nanomaterials, and 2D and 3D printing of nanomaterials for applications in tissue engineering. Currently she is a Materials and Surface Analyst & Engineer at LiquiGlide, Inc. in the Boston area, where she works to alter the interface between solids and liquids and eliminate friction to enable super slippery surfaces. An avid rugby player, Linda eagerly awaits the day she can play again.

Katherine Su

Katherine was an undergraduate researcher in Hersam Group from 2018 to 2020. Her research focused on chemical vapor deposition techniques for growth of molybdenum disulfide. Currently, she is a MSE PhD student and NSF Graduate Fellow in the Arnold group at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Jin-Myoung Lim, Ph.D.

Jin was a postdoc in the Hersam Group from 2017 to 2019. His research focused on developing graphene coating technology for the cathode and anode of lithium batteries. Currently, he is a Senior Device Engineer at Hunt Energy Enterprises, which is an emerging battery startup company in the Dallas area.

Dr. Xiaolong Liu

Xiaolong graduated with his PhD in 2018. His thesis focused on investigating novel 2D materials and heterostructures with STM, AFM, TEM, etc. He was a Kavli Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University and conducted research in areas of superconductivity, magnetic monopoles, and magnetic topological insulators with STM and SQUID. Now, he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Notre Dame.
